First West Nordic Arts & Crafts Exhibition

The first West Nordic arts and crafts exhibition was in the Laugardalur Sports Hall in Reykjavik 20th to the 24th of November 2002. It was the largest West Nordic event that year and the West Nordic countries, Iceland, Greenland and The Faroe Islands, cooperated in making the exhibition as grand as possible, gathering together the best arts and crafts people of the three countries and inviting nine neighbour nations to participate.

The Minister Industry and Commerce, Valgerður Sverrisdóttir, opened the exhibition on Wednesday the 20th of November. In her opening speech the minister talked about the importance of the West Nordic cooperation, especially in arts and culture. She said that in the future the exhibition would be held alternately in the three countries and other nations would be invited to participate for more diversity. The exhibition is the result of the contact and cooperation of the crafts people of the three West Nordic countries, that has been developing over the recent years. The pupose of the exhibition is also to make a wider network of crafts people in the northern hemisphere and therefore people from Scandinavia, the Baltic countries and Canada have been invited.

Arts and crafts objects from twelve countries and regions were exhibited at Vestnorden Arts & Crafts 2002. The exhibitors came from Iceland, The Faroe Islands, Greenland, The Aland Isles, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Canada. 140 crafts people participated, and the greatest number came from the hosting nation, Iceland, 65 exhibitors. The exhibition was a unique event because this was the first time people from all the Scandinavian countries got together for the purpose of exhibiting arts and crafts and this was also the first time arts and crafts people from the Baltic countries were invited to an arts and crafts exhibition abroad.

At the exhibition diversity was the main theme and large and small objects were on display. There were handmade candles, ceramics, ocjects made of fleece, things carved of wood or bone, jewelry, leather goods, furs and knitted clothes, to name just a few things. All the things at the exhibition were for sale and the participants were quite happy with the sales and thought the exhibition was a good platform to present and sell their work. Some of the exhibitors had workshops and showed the guests how they made their objects and at some of the workshops the guest were allowed to try their hand at making things, for exemple making candles or clay pots. The largest object that was made in the workshops at the exhibition was a traditional row boat for four rowers from the Faroe Island. The boat was made by the boat builders Jóan Pétur og Marius Clementsen and the boat was sold in Iceland.
